Referred pain
Article Abstract:
Malaysia has a relatively sound financial system but it has, nevertheless, felt the effects of the currency crisis in Thailand. The main effects were on the foreign exchange market. When the Thai bath was under pressure in May 1997 the Malaysian ringgit also came under attack from speculators. The Malaysian central bank was able to mount a successful counterattack which fended off the speculators, but Malaysia was left with high interest rates which did not ease until late Jun 1997. This affected the domestic economy, which is also suffering from poor exports.
